Responsibilities
This is a professional position responsible for examining and coordinating public health promotion and outreach activities. The incumbent is primarily responsible for promotion, investigation and surveillance activities as they relate to the public’s health. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Health Director or his/her designee and in accordance with State and Local Public Health laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. Does related work as required.
The title of Public Health Educator is Competitive, requiring applicants to meet minimum qualifications established for the position and successfully meet civil service examination requirements. The tentative test date for this examination is not yet known. Pending a criminal background check*, a provisional appointment may be made to this position. Permanent appointment will be dependent upon participation in the examination AND being reachable from the resulting eligible list.
Minimum Qualification
a. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in health education, health science, public health, health promotion, community health, or health communications; or
b. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in education, nursing, epidemiology, wellness and fitness, or nutrition and one (1) year of full-time experience or its part-time equivalence in health education; or
c. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, human services, social work or psychology and two (2) years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalence in health education; or
d. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a master’s degree in public health or health education.
Special Requirement
A local public health educator must satisfactorily complete 15 hours of continuing education in health education related topics approved by the New York State Health Department within one (1) year of appointment.
Maintains availability in the event of a public health emergency.
Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle will be required at time of appointment and continuously during employment to perform essential duties occurring during the normal course of work.
Salary: $51,439 (CSEA SG XI); benefit package available including: health, dental, and vision insurance, paid leave time, NYS Retirement System, Deferred Compensation Plan
