Responsibilities
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for providing skilled nursing care requiring substantial specialized judgment in accordance with a prescribed nursing care plan. The work is performed under general supervision with leeway for independently performing nursing care duties. Supervision may be exercised over Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Home Health Aides and other subordinate staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: The typical work activities listed below, while providing representative examples of the variety of work assignments in the title, do not describe any individual position. Incumbents in this title may perform some or all of the following, as well as other related activities not described.
Assesses patient nursing care needs and prepares, implements and evaluates the nursing care plan;
May act as a team leader over licensed practical nurses and auxiliary health care staff;
Gives skilled nursing care and prescribed treatments to patients and demonstrates nursing care to patients and families;
Identifies physical and emotional illness of patients through observation and analysis of records;
Coordinates plans for care with nutritionists, social worker, physical therapists, physicians and other professional health workers concerned with individuals and family health care;
Counsels and guides individuals and families in the prevention of illness and the attainment of maximum health;
Instructs patient or family members in regard to patient’s diet, health habits, the carrying out of treatments at home and rehabilitation measures;
May be designated to performspecial nursing functions such as in-service training, infection control, or other special functions;
Maintains essential nursing care records and reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of current professional nursing techniques; working knowledge of the relation of nursing techniques to medical and surgical practices; working knowledge of material medication, hospital dietetics, sanitation and personal hygiene; skill in the application of current nursing techniques; ability to accept and utilize guidance from supervisory
nursing staff; ability to understand and carry out technical oral and written instructions; ability to get along with and communicate effectively with other staff, patients and their families; ability to keep accurate records and make reports; ability to make accurate observations; thoroughness; cheerfulness; patience; emotional stability; sympathetic attitude toward the sick; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualification
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
(A) License and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York
State; or
(B) Possession of a valid limited permit* to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New
York State.
NOTE: Pursuant to New York State Education Law, Article 139, graduates of schools of nursing registered by the department may be employed to practice nursing under the supervision of a registered professional nurse and with the endorsement of the employing agency for ninety (90) days immediately following graduation from a nursing program and pending receipt of a limited permit for which an application has been filed.
*Such limited permit shall expire one year from the date of issuance or upon notice to the applicant that the application has been denied or ten days after notification to the applicant of failure of licensing exam.
Salary: $65,113 with an experience differential of $750 for each year up to 9 years
