Responsibilities
This is a specialized professional position responsible for applying the principles of natural and social sciences for the detection, evaluation, control and management of those factors in the environment which influence public health. Duties include performing environmental health and sanitation activities including the independent performance of inspections and investigations. Employees must satisfactorily complete the Basic Environmental Health Course approved by the New York State Department of Health within two (2) years of appointment or otherwise be separated from the position. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a Senior Public Health Sanitarian, Public Health Engineer, or other higher-level staff member. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel. The Public Health Sanitarian periodically serves after hours on-call duty for emergencies. Does related work as required.
Minimum Qualification
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree with thirty (30) semester credit hours** in the natural sciences*** of which not more than twelve (12) credit hours may be in the applied sciences****; OR,
(B) Five (5) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as a public health technician***** deemed satisfactory by the local commissioner of health or public health director and has satisfactorily completed a public health training course approved by the New York State Health Department (the Basic Environmental Health Course).

***The term natural science, per Title 10 Department of Health Chapter 1 State Sanitary Code of the Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York (10 CRR-NY 11.110 Definition) shall mean a science such as biology, chemistry or physic s that deals with the objects, phenomena, or laws of nature and the physical works. It shall include all physical and biological sciences.
****The term applied science, per Title 10 Department of Health Chapter 1 State Sanitary Code of the Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York (10 CRR-NY 11.110 Definition) shall mean science-based courses in environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control or food science.
*****The term public health technician, per Title 10 Department of Health Chapter 1 State Sanitary Code of the Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York (10 CRR-NY 11.120 Definition) shall mean a person who assists sanitarians and engineers in the prevention and control programs affecting the public’s health
Candidates qualifying under (A) above must satisfactorily complete a public health training course approved by the State Health Department within two (2) years of appointment.

Salary: $41,249 - $56,517 annually
