Probationary Period Notice

Permanent appointments are subject to a probationary period. The probationary period provides an opportunity for the employee to demonstrate their ability to perform the duties of the position satisfactorily. During this time, performance and conduct will be evaluated to determine whether permanent status should be granted at the end of the probationary term. The probationary period typically ranges from eight (8) to twenty-six (26) weeks.

NY-HELP

This position is being filled through the New York State Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program. For the duration of this program, this title has been reclassified to the non-competitive class. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications may be appointed on a non-competitive basis. In accordance with the program’s guidelines, employees appointed under NY HELPS will be transitioned to permanent competitive status without further examination after successfully completing one year of satisfactory service in the title.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The Director of Ambulance Services is responsible for the24-hour provision of ambulance services in assigned areas of Erie County. This position involves managerial, administrative, supervisory, and specialized work functions associated with overseeing and operating the Erie County Ambulance program. Responsible for general administration, budgeting, personnel management, capital improvement

plans, and policies and procedures development. The incumbent will work under the general supervision of the Deputy Commissioner for Emergency Medical Services or higher-level Health staff. Supervision is exercised over Paramedic and EMT staff. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

– Plans, organizes, and directs all aspects of the ambulance services program, including personnel, budgeting, general administration, and capital needs assessment;

– Develops, recommends, implements department policies and procedures, internal controls, and goals and objectives in accordance with department needs, Counts policies and legal requirements;

– Recruits and recommends the hiring of Paramedics and EMTS;

– Assigns work, supervises personnel, evaluates performance, and oversees training and professional development;

– Develops and assesses contracts with municipalities for ambulance services;

– May be required to perform paramedic or EMT duties.

Minimum Qualification

A) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree** and six (6) years of experience as a paramedic of which two (2) years shall have been in administrative capacity; or

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school general equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of experience as a Paramedic, including two (2) years shall have been in administrative capacity; or

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Special Requirement

  • The candidate must possess NYS Department of Health Paramedic certification at the time of application and maintain such certification for the duration of employment; and
  • The candidate must possess a valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification at the time of application and maintain such certification for the duration of employment; and
  • Must successfully comply with annual skill and didactic credentialing, training and/or review as outlined by the Western Regional Medical Advisory Committee and maintain certifications for the duration of employment; and
  • The candidate must possess a valid Class D New York State Driver’s License at the time of appointment and maintain such license for the duration of employment.

Salary: $76,076
