Distinguishing Features of the Class
The work involves providing dental hygiene services and oral health education in community-based settings on behalf of the Department of Health. The incumbent plays a key role in promoting oral health through education, prevention, and community engagement. Responsibilities include collaborating with schools, community organizations, and the public to raise awareness of the importance of oral health. Activities may include fluoride varnish application, oral screenings, classroom instruction, and coordinating dental referrals. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Implements outreach strategies to promote oral health across the lifespan, with a focus on underserved populations;
- Provides community-based oral health education with an emphasis on caries prevention, prenatal oral health, and the benefits of fluoride and fluoridated water;
- Delivers a second-grade dental education program in elementary schools, including engaging presentations, demonstrations, and distribution of oral hygiene supplies;
- Assists with data collection and reporting to support program evaluation and improvement efforts;
- Attends community events, health fairs to promote oral health awareness and services;
Minimum Qualification
Possession of a current, valid license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist as issued by the New York State Education Department at the time of appointment.
Special Requirement
Possession of a current, valid license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist as issued by the New York State Education Department at the time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; and
The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to travel independently to outreach sites within Erie County, including those not accessible by public transportation; and
Possession of current CPR certification at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
Salary: $49,379
