Responsibilities
Distinguishing Features of the Class
The work involves assisting area hospital and ambulance services in the development, implementation and coordination of advanced life support/paramedic programs. The incumbent also assists in the direction and supervision of an emergency medical services communication system. This is administrative /technical work involving the coordination and implementation of advanced life support/paramedic programs under the Department of Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The work is performed under the general supervision of higher ranking professional and/or administrative employees of the department. Supervision is exercised over technical and para-professional staff. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Develops and coordinates basis pre-hospital emergency medical care training programs, including the following: EMT (emergency medical technician), EMT-Refresher, CFR (Certified First Responder), and CFR-Refresher classes;
- Assists area hospital and ambulance services in the development of advanced life support/paramedic programs;
- Assists operational advanced life support/paramedic units in implementing standards to facilitate a County-wide ALS system;
- Coordinates the emergency medical services communication system (MERS) on a routine basis and in time of actual potential disaster situations;
- Serves on Advanced Life Support advisory committees and acts as a liaison between county hospital administration and operational advanced life support/paramedic units receiving medical direction;
Minimum Qualification
A) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree* and two (2) years of Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or Paramedic experience, at least one (1) year of which included the development, implementation and evaluation of advanced life support; systems; or:
B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of AEMT or Paramedic experience, at least one (1) year of which included the development/implementation and evaluation of advance life support systems; or:
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
Special Requirement
- Candidates must have completed necessary coursework or accepted program and possess a New York State EMT- Paramedic certification at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
- Possession of a New York state driver’s license and a car available for use at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
Salary: $66,219
