Responsibilities

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The work involves assisting in the environmental health program by performing work of a professional environmental health engineering nature of ordinary difficulty and responsibility under the direction of a licensed professional engineer. The work entails assisting in carrying out any specific phases of the program, advising public officials or individuals on problems requiring professional public health engineering knowledge and judgment, including measures for improvement and compliance with regulatory requirements, codes and standards and assisting in the promotion of public health through application of environmental health practices. Supervision is exercised over lower level technical and clerical staff. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Investigates and makes reports and recommendations on public and private water supplies or onsite wastewater treatment systems, swimming and bathing facilities, stream pollution, sanitary conditions of campgrounds, temporary residences, food service establishments and general sanitation, air pollution, environmental health nuisances and any other environmental health related programs;
  • Interprets, maintains and prepares reports based on the results of laboratory examination of water, sewage, industrial waste, air and other samples;
  • Consults with water system operators, and other parties concerning the principles, practices and problems associated to water systems;
  • Assists in the instruction and assessment for certification of local water plant operators;

 

Minimum Qualification

A) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree* in Engineering; or:

B) Possession of a license to practice as a professional engineer in New York State**.

NOTE 2: ** If qualifying by (B) option, you must maintain license throughout duration of appointment

Special Requirement

Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License and have automotive transportation available to meet travel and field work requirements in a timely and efficient manner at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

Salary: $70,314
